Notes:
Born in Madrid in 1954, Sicilia was educated at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He moved to Paris in 1980 where he met fellow Spanish artists Barceló Miquel and Miguel Ángel Campano. Sicilia’s work is influenced by the paintings of Piet Mondrian and Kazmir Malivich, as well as the artist’s own travels to Tangier, Syria, India, and New York. He is one of the most significant representations of Spanish painting in the 1980s, taking up the practice of a “material” perspective in painting. Since 1985, Sicilia has worked on the subjects of flowers for which he is renowned. Sicilia is known for his paintings which use wax and printer’s ink to explore the space between appearance and absence, and the analyses of shape and the construction of space. In works such as Multiflower, the use of wax allows for possibilities of a dialogue with light on the pictorial surfaces, typical of Sicilia’s work.
