Johnny Inukpuk Qumaluk (1937-1985)

Puvirnituq

Kneeling man putting on his hood, mid 1950s, dark brown-black stone, signed "INNUKPAK" and with disc no., 7 x 4.75 x 5.375 in, 17.3 x 12.1 x 13.7 cm

Qumaluk was not a prolific artist and little is known about him or his art. This work, however, ranks with that of the famous Puvirnituq artist Charlie Sivuarapik from the same period of the mid 1950s in terms of finesse and sensitivity. Lovely textural details add to the overall delicacy of the piece. Provenance: This sculpture was a gift from Lester B. Pearson to the President of the Canadian Labour Congress, in 1958.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
