John Long is a Toronto-based artist who received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Photography from Ryerson University in 1981. Long began experimenting with a medium stereo format in 1988, and has been using a 1929 Rolleidoscope medium-format stereo camera since then.
Today, using an artistic process involving a blend of the antique with current technologies, he takes his photographs on fine-grain, low-speed film, and digitizes his results using a scanner. The images (digitally enhanced and/or spliced into panoramic vistas) are printed on his large-format Epson 9600 printer on Enhanced Matte Paper using Ultrachrome inks.
Long's stereo work is most often presented in triptychs, giving viewers the option of looking at the left pair with a HyperView large-format viewer, or considering the centre and right photographs using the crossed-eye technique—this latter a method recently employed exclusively for his large 24"x 48" stereo prints. Panoramic and large format prints are photographed using his Fuji 617 camera, the transparencies scanned (digitized) and then printed with his Epson 9600, this process giving him a sharpness and detail that enables him to produce artworks up to 44" in width; panoramic vistas are normally generated in 36" x 88" size.
For his other large format prints he uses a variety of medium-format cameras (mostly Rollei with Zeiss or Schneider lenses) that deliver very high-quality 44" x 44" prints.
