JOHN KAUNAK CM (1941-)

REPULSE BAY, Igloo and Totem Composition, 1962

Mottled dark green stone and ivory

11.25 x 2.75 x 4 in, 28.8 x 7 x 10.2 cm

Kaunak is perhaps the most famous artist from Repulse Bay, best known for his wonderful, quite naturalistic long-necked polar bears. This is a fine example of his art closer to what George Swinton referred to as the Repulse Bay "folk art" tradition.

For a similar composition by fellow Repulse Bay artist Bernadette Ivaluardjuk Saumik, see Jean Blodgett, Repulse Bay (WAG 1978), cat. ill. 41.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
