Notes:
Hammond was born in Montreal, and spent time painting in Dordrecht, Holland with James Whistler, as well as with Jean-François Millet at Barbizon, France. Recognition came to him in Europe, and he won two painting awards in the Paris Salon in 1886. The influence of Hammond's European exposure shows in this work with its atmospheric haze of colour and reflected light.
