James Cockburn studied at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, England from 1793 - 1795. He was posted to Canada as Lieutenant Colonel, 60th Regiment from 1826 - 1832 and eventually reached the rank of Major General. Cockburn was well known for his European and Canadian topographical watercolour paintings. His description of Quebec and its environs was published in Quebec in 1831, illustrated with eight etchings after his watercolours. Twelve of his Canadian views were published in London in 1833.
