Notes:
James Nizam’s photographic practice blurs the boundaries between documentation, sculpture, architecture, technology, music, and the sciences. His Thought Form series is produced by setting up a small aperture in a confined space with a number of deliberately positioned mirrors; he then strategically places incisions in the walls and ceiling. When sunlight fills the room, a complex and ethereal geometric form appears, which he then photographs. Nizam sometimes applies multiple exposures taken over the course of many hours to the image. Working alone, Nizam makes deliberate, calculated actions in the space, most of which are not apparent in the final work to the viewer.
Nizam’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at such venues as Gallery Jones, Vancouver; Vancouver Art Gallery; Surrey Art Gallery; Christophe Guye Galerie, Zurich; Galerie Clement & Schneider, Bonn; Musée régional de Rimouski, Québec; Reiter Galerie, Berlin; Sharjah Art Museum, United Arab Emirates; Wilhelm Wagenfeld Stiftung, Bremen; and Yukon Arts Centre, Whitehorse, amongst others. His exhibition Apparent Motions was part of Capture’s 2019 Selected Exhibition Program. Nizam is based in Port Alberni.
Consignor proceeds will benefit Capture Photography Festival.
