Jacob Echalook (1930-1965)
Inukjuak (Port Harrison)
Woman with braids softening a boot, ca. 1963-65, mottled black stone, signed in syllabics and with disc no., 12.5 x 6.25 x 9.25 in, 31.8 x 15.9 x 23.5 cm
This is a remarkable sculpture by a little-known artist. It invites comparison with the classic works by the great Johnny Inukpuk from the same period of the mid-1960s. As do the best of Inukpuk's pieces, this sculpture by Echalook transcends its everyday subject matter to become iconic. The woman exudes strength and determination; Echalook's handiwork is marked by both robustness and delicacy.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
