Notes:
Iwao Akiyama was born in 1921 in Takeda, Japan, and from the age of eight studied drawing under the direction of a Buddhist monk. He then studied at the Taiheiyo Bijutsu Gakko, graduating 1956. He originally pursued ink painting but studied woodblock printing with the master Shake Munakarta from 1959 to 1965, and focused on woodblock printing for the rest of his career. Iwao Akiyama died in Matsudo, Japan, in 2014 at the age of 93. Akiyama's works can be found in many important public collections, including the British Museum, National Gallery of Canada, National Gallery of Scotland, Cincinnati Art Museum, National Museum of Scotland, Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, National Gallery of Victoria (Australia), Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (Canada).
