Hubbell lived in France from 1898-1910. In 1898-99, he enrolled in James Abbot McNeill Whistler's Academie Carmen in Paris. He was one of only a few artists that studied with Whistler.

The sitter is the same woman wearing the same striped jacket as in the painting "Tea Time", executed by the artist, circa 1909, that sold at Sotheby's New York on December 2, 2010, lot 72.
