Three Kings

Henry George Glyde was born in Luton, England in 1906. He graduated from the Royal College of Art (London) in 1930, and was an instructor at the there as well as other colleges before immigrating to Canada in 1935. In Calgary, Alberta, Glyde taught drawing at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now the Alberta College of Art) becoming head of the art department in 1936. One year later he began teaching community art classes through the University of Alberta (Edmonton) and went on to establish the Department of Fine Art there, where he taught from 1946 to 1966. He also pioneered the establishment of community art courses in smaller communities throughout Alberta, and was head of the painting division of the Banff School of Fine Arts. As an artist, GlydeâÀ™s work was exhibited widely throughout Canada and internationally, including the major retrospective produced by the Glenbow Museum (Calgary) in 1987, and his work graces the $1 stamp issued for CanadaâÀ™s centennial in 1967. Glyde was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists, the Federation of Canadian Artists, and a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. His work can be found in many major public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Toronto Art Gallery, and Glenbow Museum (Calgary). Henry George Glyde died in Victoria, British Columbia in 1998.
