Lot description - from the online catalogue*
Provenance:
A gift from the Artist (who was the present owner's great-aunt) to the present owner's mother
By descent to the present Private Collection, Ontario
Notes:
In 1920, a group of men and women, including May, joined together to rent studios and exhibition space on the fringe of Montreal's old financial district; the address was 305 Beaver Hall Hill, and thus the Beaver Hall Group was formed.
In 1924 May spent the winter painting with A.Y. Jackson and Randolph Hewton in Baie Saint-Paul, Quebec. Jackson's influence on the development of May's style left an indelible mark on her subsequent work, as evidenced in Village from the Hill, with her adherence to a bolder colour palette and her treatment of the undulating rhythms of the landscape. Village from the Hill also bears a remarkable similarity to another work by May entitled The Village from 1925 (in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada), where one can once again see the energetic depiction of a charming Quebec village.
May made a positive and thoughtful contribution to the Canadian art scene, and when the National Gallery of Canada purchased one of her paintings in 1913 and went on to purchase another three before 1924, her place was secured.
