Born in Holland, Hendrik Kruseman van Elten was a landscape painter who emigrated to the United States in 1865. He lived primarily in New York City where he was invited into the Tenth Street Studio Building by his countryman, and fellow artist, Mauritz F. H. de Haas (1832-1895).

Kruseman painted scenes in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, where he kept a summer home in the Catskill artist colony at Ellenville.
