Notes:
SKNAC Bio: Helen Lucas was born in 1931 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and grew up in Saskatoon. Her parents had emigrated from Greece, and Lucas was raised with traditional Greek Orthodox observances and studied theology for a time. Lucas studied painting at the Ontario College of Art (Toronto), then was Drawing and Painting Master at Sheridan College (Oakville, Ontario) from 1973 to 1979. In a career spanning 50 years, Helen Lucas received innumerable solo exhibitions, while key publications include Roots to the Present - A Retrospective (York University, 2017), This is My Beloved - Sometimes (Mintmark Press, 1981) and the documentary film Helen Lucas - Her Journey, Our Journey (Donna Davey). Her artwork can be found in many important public collections, such as Art Gallery of Ontario, York University (Toronto), Kenderdine Gallery (University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon), McGill University (Montreal), City of Toronto Fine Art Collection, Museo di Arte e Culture (Abruzzo, Italy), Soviet Women's Committee (Moscow) In 1991 Lucas was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by York University, and In 2012 received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Helen Lucas currently lives in King Township, Ontario.
