Year: 1908

Hartwell Leon Woodcock (American, 1853-1929) was a popular 19th and early 20th-century watercolourist who frequently painted scenes of coastal New England and the Bahamas. Woodcock was born in 1852 in Searsmont, Maine. He studied art first in Boston with portrait painter Frederick E. Wright (1849-1891) and later attended the Academie Colarossi in Paris, France, an avant-garde art institution whose students include Gauguin and Modigliani.

In addition a vast body of work depicting the Maine coastal landscape, Woodcock also created a significant number of paintings based on his yearly trips to Nassau, Bahamas.
