Harry Leslie Smith was born in Montreal in 1900. At age sixteen he began his formal art studies at the Art School of the Council of Arts, in Montreal, with Edmund Dyonnet, then with Maurice Cullen in Georgeville in 1919. In 1922 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Smith later taught at the Sir George Williams School of Art, in Montreal, and acted as Director of the School of Art. Smith's work was exhibited widely in Quebec, including regular selections at the Art Association of Montreal and at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The Arts Club of Montreal hosted retrospectives of Smith's work in 1947 and in 1967. His work can be found in several permanent collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Concordia University. H. Leslie Smith died in 1974.
