Provenance:
Private Collection, British Columbia
The Sable-Castelli Gallery Ltd., Toronto
Notes:
Ontario-born Gina Rorai uses stylistic elements of traditional still life and landscape paintings to create her highly structured abstract paintings, demonstrating an acute knowledge of the history of her medium. Often, Rorai begins her process with a specific figural image in mind, then proceeds to paint over top of it so the image appears distant but still visible. The subject of the painting then belongs to both the present and the past. This act of juxtaposing the figural with the abstract highlights both the disparity and similarity of the two, creating a unique acknowledgement and appreciation of both the subject matter, and the medium itself.
Rorai graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1989 and began exhibiting her artwork in 1987 with the art dealer Sable Castelli. She continues to exhibit in Toronto, and has been a part of multiple group exhibitions in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco.
