Notes:
The exhibition pamphlet for And Still Counting states: “The Khyber Arts Society and the Halifax Regional Municipality commissioned Halifax artist Garry Neill Kennedy to make an artwork of the 27 plywood inserts that temporarily replaced the windows while undergoing restorative replacement and double glazing. The building, the former Church of England Institute, is a significant Halifax Heritage Property. It has been occupied by the Khyber Arts Society as a non-profit Artist-run Centre for close to 15 years.”

A senior conceptual artist best known for his work in paint, Garry Neill Kennedy explores the overlooked meanings of the common place, often with a trickster twist. For instance, to create his 1978 work The Average Size, The Average Colour, Kennedy analyzed the paintings of 32 Canadian artists, deducing that the average colour was a non-descript taupe and the average size a mid-range square (55.75” by 55.75” by 1.5"). Colour and language are also the focus the series The Native (Painting on Canvas) (1990), which features an alphabetical arrangement of house paint colours named for North American aboriginal cultures, and his site specific wall-sized installations The Colours of Citizen Arar (2007-08) which incorporates the hues named by Maher Arar in describing his torture in Syria. Kennedy's work has been extensively exhibited in Canada and abroad, including a significant retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada (2000) and as part of The Ironic Turn (2003) international touring show of Canadian conceptual practice. Celebrated for his artistic achievements with the Portia White Prize by the Arts Council of Nova Scotia (2000) and the Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts (2004), Kennedy also served as the president of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) for 23 years, during which time it flourished into an internationally recognized hub of conceptual practice. He was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2004 and continues to teach and work in Halifax.
