Francis Crawford Penfold was born and raised in Lockport New York, the son of English-born American portrait painter William Penfold. First taught by his father, Penfold exhibited with the Buffalo Society of Artists in 1875 before moving to France in 1877 to further his art training. Penfold was soon exhibiting at the Paris salons and galleries. In 1884, he studied in Finistère (Brittany) and enrolled at the Académie Julian. The artist travelled back to the United States with some regularity, to exhibit and to teach at the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. He spent most of his time in Pont-Aven, an art colony in Brittany, where he established an art school as well as a home.
