Notes:
Farquhar McGillivray Knowles was born in 1859 in Syracuse, NY, of Scottish ancestry. Early in his life, the Knowles family moved to Canada where he received his early education in Guelph, Ontario. As a young man encouraged by his grandfather, it looked as though he would pursue a military career. In his fourth year at West Point military academy, however, he suffered a serious accident which put an end to the possibility of military service. This fateful event changed the course of his life and he began to pursue more artistic avenues.
