Dans le cadre de sa pratique, le sculpteur figuratif Evan Penny s’intéresse à l’influence du classicisme et du romantisme – et plus tard de la photographie et des technologies numériques – sur le réalisme en sculpture. Ses œuvres ne se veulent pas une affirmation ou une assertion, mais plutôt un questionnement sur l’observation, l’identité et notre monde axé sur l’image. Après les vives critiques suscitées par ses nus d’un réalisme cru exécutés selon la technique traditionnelle du modelage dans les années 1980, Penny entame un long détour par l’industrie du cinéma : il créera des prothèses et des effets spéciaux de maquillage pour plus de 25 films, y compris pour des réalisateurs connus tels que David Cronenberg, Oliver Stone et John Woo. C’est la découverte du travail de Ron Mueck en 1998 qui l’incite à revenir à son atelier.

Penny est né en Afrique du Sud en 1953 et a immigré au Canada en 1964. Il a fait ses études en beaux-arts (1975), puis en sculpture (1978) à l’Alberta College of Art (aujourd’hui l’Alberta University of the Arts). Ses œuvres, qui figurent dans un grand nombre de collections publiques au Canada et aux États-Unis, ont aussi fait l’objet de plus d’une vingtaine d’expositions individuelles au pays et ailleurs dans le monde. Penny vit et travaille à Toronto. Il est représenté par la galerie TrépanierBaer de Calgary. (J.D.)

In his practice, figurative sculptor Evan Penny is interested in the influence of classicism and romanticism (and, more recently, photography and digital technologies) on sculptural realism. His works are meant to be not an affirmation or statement, but an interrogation of observation, of identity, and of an image-oriented world. After the lively criticisms elicited by the stark realism of his nudes, executed in traditional modelling technique in the 1980s, Penny began a long excursion into the film industry, creating prosthetics and special make-up effects for more than 25 movies, including for such well-known directors as David Cronenberg, Oliver Stone, and John Woo. It was the discovery of Ron Mueck’s work in 1998 that prompted him to return to his studio.

Penny was born in South Africa in 1953 and immigrated to Canada in 1964. He studied fine arts (1975) and then sculpture (1978) at the Alberta College of Art (now the Alberta University of the Arts). His works, found in many major public collections in Canada and the United States, have also been shown in over 20 solo exhibitions in Canada and throughout the world. Penny lives and works in Toronto. He is represented by the TrépanierBaer Gallery in Calgary.
