Eva Rubinstein was born in 1833 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while her father pianist Arthur Rubinstein was on a concert tour of South America. She is of Polish ancestry and grew up in Paris. In 1939 the family emigrated to United States. From a young age Eva Rubinstein studied dance. She attended Scripps College (Claremont, California) and the University of California (Los Angeles). From 1953 she worked as a dancer and actress in New York, while in the late 1960s she became seriously in photography and attended workshops with Lisette Model and Diane Arbus. While working as a photojournalist Rubinstein consistently did personal work, often intimate portraits, nudes and interiors. In the 1970s she led workshops at the School of Visual Arts (New York) and at Manhattanville College, among other venues. Rubinstein's work can be found in many important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston) and the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago).
