Formerly in the collection of artist Anthony Thorn, who was mentored by Dreyfuss while in Chicago in the 1950s, and features a dedication verso.
Notes:
Ernest Dreyfuss was born in Frankfurt am Main on January 1, 1903. He studied art and at some point was disciple of Max Beckman and Ugi Battenberg. He survived internment at Buchenwald and fled the Nazis to England in 1940 and emigrated to the United States one year later. He settled in Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois, where as an eccentric neighbourhood artist he is said to have been the model for a character in a Saul Bellow story. He became a mentor of Anthony Thorn when Thorn was attending the University of Chicago in the 1950s. Dreyfuss stopped painting in 1971 and died in 1977.
