Erica Rutherford was born Eric Rutherford in 1923 in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1976 Rutherford had sex reassignment surgery. She lived in several countries around the world throughout her life, including England, Spain, the midwest United States, South Africa, and Toronto. She settled permanently in Prince Edward Island in 1985. Rutherford started the Printmakers Council of PEI. She was also involved in the printmaking community at Open Studio, in Toronto. Rutherford was admitted to the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists in 1999. Her work is part of the collections at the Canada Council Art Bank, the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Island Art Collection of the Government of PEI and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has exhibited internationally.
