EMILE CLAUS (BELGIAN, 1824-1924)

"Flandres"

Oil on canvas

Signed lower right

Signed and titled verso

Size: 32 1/4 in. x 46 in. / 81.92 cm x 116.84 cm

Framed: 38 13/16 in. x 53 in. / 98.55 cm x 134.62 cm

Note: This work was painted from the grounds of 'Zonneschijn', the artist's house at Astene, on the banks of the river Lys. 'Zonneschijn', where he settled in 1883. This location was the setting of many of Claus's most important works.Emile Verhaeren, a close friend of the artist, wrote of Claus' work: 'His art is sure, clear and ceaselessly in search of air, light and life. It commands respect this country as the art of a Master'. "augustus IA" also inscribed verso and number "13488"

In one of the photos we have someone pointing out where the "iA" on the back would show through on the front. We have examined this spot, as well as the entire work, under black light, and there does not appear to be any restoration. Overall the painting is in excellent condition with no surface cracking or loss. There are good marks on the back of the original canvas and stretcher, and it is in a nice period frame. Please note, this work has not been examined out of its frame.

The absence of a condition report does not indicate that the lot is in excellent condition. Buyers are responsible for determining the condition of lots by submitting a request, as there are no returns based on condition.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
