Notes:
Elizabeth McIntosh has been teaching painting and visual art in the Audain Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University since 2005. She received her MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. Her work has been presented across Canada and the United States including exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver; Parisian Laundry, Montreal; Diaz Contemporary, Toronto; Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; and Santa Monica Museum of Art, among others. Her artworks are held in public and private collections across Canada including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; and Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. McIntosh is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the 2013 VIVA Award. She is currently represented by Catriona Jeffries gallery in Vancouver.
Diamonds is a five-colour serigraph that is indicative of Elizabeth’s work; it is a serendipitous geometric abstraction with soft edges and bold colours. The artist’s decision to print this edition full-bleed is a painterly one, and it pushes up against the traditions of printmaking. This contemporary approach, including the frame selection, suits the work’s clean, modern aesthetic.
Established in 1989 by renowned BC artist-patrons Gordon Smith, Jack Shadbolt and Bill Reid, Artists for Kids was founded with the singular intent to support children, their art education and their future. Through art specialists, it provides enriching art-making experiences for thousands of students each year across Canada as well as professional development opportunities for educators. In 1990, the group published the first Artists for Kids Limited Edition Portfolio print, Xhuwaji / Haida Grizzly. This print by Reid, based on a ceremonial drum, marked the beginning of an extraordinary partnership with now more than 100 Canadian artists—from Kenojuak Ashevak to Ian Wallace—that has produced one of the most significant limited edition collections in the country. Proceeds from the sale of prints fund educational programs, artist residencies, art camps, scholarships, bursaries, and future acquisitions for Artists for Kids and the Gordon Smith Gallery Permanent Collection.
