Notes:
Flower paintings and still-lifes have been a favourite among collectors since the 16th and 17th centuries, and it has been said that no one could better depict the reflection in a wineglass better than Edward Ladell.

Ladell spent his entire life painting the sort of compositions of fruit, foliage and glass objects with the precision and in the spirit of many of the early Netherlandish artists. The glass goblet on the left, with its reflection showing two arched windows with a view to the outdoors and village houses beyond expands the space of the room. The illusion of what is beyond the space of the room in which the flowers sit is reminiscent of the Netherlandish painter Jan Van Eyck's "Arnolfini Portrait" (or "The Arnolfini Wedding"), executed five centuries earlier. There, Van Eyck painted the entire room in miniature in the reflection of a mirror on the wall. The minute detail of the objects depicted in the room through the mirror are painted with such precision, they appear to have been painted with a magnifying glass. In Ladell's piece we get a similar impression, counterbalanced by lush velvet drapes and the brimming basket of jewel-like fruits.

Ladell exhibited 30 pictures at the Royal Academy between the years 1856-1886.
