Notes:
Duane Michals is an innovative contributor to artistic photography whose work is grounded in narrative and film-like sequences. He is known for manipulating the medium to evoke various emotions and ideas. Rather than using text to explain his work, he incorporates it into the image to add an additional dimension of meaning and thought provocation. Michals obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Denver and worked for some time as a photojournalist. He then attended Parsons School of Design with an interest in graphic design before his attention was pulled towards photography. In the 1960s and 1970s, he worked as a commercial photographer for Esquire, Mademoiselle Magazine and Vogue. He has photographed many celebrities and artists, including Tilda Swinton, Meryl Streep, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte and Andy Warhol.
