DOMINIC KINGILIK (1939-1990)
BAKER LAKE, Muskox, ca. 1965
Grey stone and muskox horn
9.5 x 14 x 5.75 in, 24.1 x 35.6 x 14.6 cm
For a similar work by Kingilik in the TD Bank Collection, see George Swinton, Sculpture of the Inuit (1972/1992), ill. 701, p. 225.
The muskox, with its compact, massive overall form, is an animal subject ideally suited to the Baker Lake sculptural aesthetic. Perhaps also the animal's seemingly stoic nature, and the circular formation by which the animal famously protects its young, have struck a chord with the Inuit of the Baker Lake region. Kingilik's elegant portrayal exudes strength and serenity.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
