David Garneau was born in 1962 in Edmonton, Alberta. He moved to Calgary at the age of 17 but soon returned to Edmonton to begin a career in childcare. During this time he made sculptures of people he saw around Edmonton, and though he was selling his work regularly, he decided to return to Calgary to study painting and drawing at the University of Calgary. Garneau received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1989. He went on to receive his Masters in American Literature in 1993. He taught at the University of Calgary and the Alberta College of Art until 1999, and then moved to Regina, Saskatchewan to teach at the University of Regina.
