Notes:
Philip Shackleton wrote the definitive book, "The Furniture of Old Ontario." This work has been held in the Shackleton family for over half a century.
According to David A. de Witt, former Bader Gallery Curator of European Art at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, Ontario, the theme of this picture until this exhibition resisted deciphering. In the note to the catalogue, de Witt states, "[...] Its martial character and oriental setting evoke Torquato Tasso's famous epic poem, Jerusalem Liberate (1581). He continues, "Maclise was the foremost subject painter in England during the first half of the 19th century, and boasted wide reading, drawing from sources such as English and Continental European history, Shakespeare, legend and literature." Although the title in the exhibition was Young Lovers Held Captive (unknown historical scene), the painting appears to depict a tranquil conversation between a stately couple, possibly even Charlemagne with one of his wives relating a story to his soldiers.
