CHARLES KEITH MILLER (British, 1836-1907)

The British Steamer Strathleven

Oil on canvas

Signed with initials and dated 1876

Size: 26 x 40 in.

Strathleven, along with Dunedin, was central to the nascent frozen meat trade during the 19th century. She was built in 1875, also in Glasgow, by Blackwood and Gordon for Burrell and Son; she, however, was an iron steamer. She had a gross tonnage of 2436 and was 320 ft long.

In 1880, Strathleven sailed from Australia to the UK with a cargo of frozen meat, 50 tons of frozen beef and mutton, which was the first time this had been achieved. The vessel was abandoned in 1901 when she damaged by a storm. She was en route to Barcelona with a cargo of phosphorous.
