Notes:
This rare-to-the-market 1913 Dieppe painting by British painter Charles Ginner was recently rediscovered in an important Canadian collection. The whereabouts of this work has been unknown since the early 1920s when the work was sold at Christies, London for £3 13s 6d. Scholars knew of its existence through listings in volume one of Ginner's unpublished notebooks. The small pochade/sketch for this painting entitled Le Quai Duquesne is in the collection of The Graves Gallery Museum, Sheffield.

This magnificient oil on canvas found its way to Canada and into the collection of famed Canadian collector Ernest E. Poole. The work has been passed through the Poole family to his grandaughter. Poole was a self-made industrialist who made his fortune by traveling west to the Prairies and starting a construction business which became the Poole Construction Company, headquartered in Edmonton. He died in 1964, and in 1975 the Ernest E. Poole Foundation made a major donation of 90 historical Canadian art works from this collection to Edmonton's Art Gallery of Alberta.

Ginner was a founding member of the Camden Town Group, Fitzroy Street Group and The London Group, associations that also included artists Gilman, Pissaro, Sickert, C.R.W. Nevinson, Squire and Wadsworth, among others.

During World War I Ginner served in the British Royal Army Ordinance Corps and the Intelligence Corps prior to moving to the Canadian War Records. He produced a painting entitled The Filling Factory, 1916, now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (transferred from the Canadian War Memorials in 1921). It is possible that Poole knew of this work in the National Gallery of Canada and from that became interested in acquiring works by Ginner.

Dieppe has historically been an important destination and subject for artists. The casino and baths at the seaside provided an exciting landscape, as well as, social scene. The location is midway between London and Paris. Visitors from both directions travelled through the station Gare Maritime at Dieppe which linked the sea port and the rail line, which extended out onto the Quay, as pictured here with the steam train lower right side.

This lively Post-Impressionist work is an outstanding early example by the artist and was painted on Ginner's 1913 visit to Dieppe. A sister piece from the same date titled La Vieille Balayeuse, Dieppe, 1913, is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London.
