Lot description - from the online catalogue*

Provenance:
From the collection of Dr. Alan Ross, Regina.
Notes:
Canute Caliste was a naive painter from Grenada. Working mainly with acrylics on hardboard, Caliste would often produce up to 20 paintings in a day in his prime, and would run out of supplies almost as soon as he got hold of them. His main theme was the everyday scenes of Carriacou, an island 13 miles square, 23 miles north-east of Grenada. His awkwardly painted figures and documentary style exhibited the charm and traditions of the Caribbean. Canute was something of an eccentric - he claimed he was inspired to paint by a mermaid in a vision, and a sign at the end of the garden path of his modest home read "This way to the great artist".
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
