Tang received an MFA from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. Brendan Tang is represented by Gallery Jones. In 2018, Tang was an artist-in-residency at BAF where he developed a series of sculptures created out of geometric pieces of black foam core and strips of word that evoked scaffolding, metro maps, cell networks, rhizomes, skeletal systems, and structural formulae for complex molecules.

Tang’s work in predominantly ceramics explores issues of identity and the nearly seamless fusion between material and non-material cultures. His work also celebrates his appreciation for futuristic technologies, in addition to ancient tradition. Punchout is a part of Tang’s Joss Paper series of watercolour-painted replicas of nostalgic objects and ephemera. “Joss Paper” refers to the Chinese tradition of burning a paper replica of a gift meant for a distant loved one. Punchout is a unique work.
