Notes:
Birthe Piontek is interested in the expansion of the two-dimensional photographic surface. She explores the relationship between memory and identity and between the female body and objects. In the Janus series, the idea of transformation is depicted by focusing on objects like fruits, vegetables and flowers—items that are commonly associated with the traditional still-life genre. Some objects are photographed alone, while in other images Piontek performs with them, revealing an affinity between her body and the objects. Much of the series rests on the idea of a likeness of all organic matter that is exposed to the forces of change.
Piontek’s work has been presented in both solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Burrard Arts Foundation, Gallery Jones, and Pendulum Gallery (all in Vancouver); and Film Forum, Seattle, amongst others. Her work is featured in many private and public collections such as the Museum of Applied Arts (Gera), Germany and Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. Her work has been included in Capture Photography Festival numerous times, most recently as part of Capture’s 2022 Featured Exhibition, Family Album. Piontek is an Assistant Professor of Photography in the Audain Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver.
Consignor proceeds will benefit Capture Photography Festival.
