Bert Weir was born in Sandwich, Ontario in 1925, growing up exploring the wilderness through the Boy Scouts of Canada. After serving as a stoker on the HMCS Poundmaker in the Canadian Navy, Weir started at the Ontario College of Art in 1948, where he was a student of Jock Macdonald's, and graduated with an honours degree in sculpture. Bert founded the McKellar Lodge Summer School in McKellar, Ontario, where he taught artists and produced his own work, while later teaching commercial at at W.D. Lowe Technical School in Windsor, Ontario for twelve years. Bert's artwork is within the collection of numerous establishments and institutions across Canada, including the University of Windsor, both the Blackwood Gallery and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House at the University of Toronto and the Laurentian University Museum and Arts Centre, Sudbury. In 2010 Lisa Daniels published a book about Bert's life and work entitled "Bert Weir".
