Notes from Sotheby's Catalogue, 2005: The subject of the present painting is derived from a work by Frans Snyders in the Uffizzi Palace, Florence.
This subject was treated by Gagneraux on several occasions. A version was sold in Sotheby's, London on July 7, 1999 lot 595, another is in the Kunsthalle, Bremen and a related drawing for the Bremen painting is in the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Dijon (for comparisons see S. Laveissiere, Benigne Gagnereaux, un peintre bourguignon dans la Rome neoclassique, exh. cat., Dijon, Musee des Beaux-Arts and Rome, Academie de France, 1983, pp. 82-85, nos. 14-15, reproduced).
