Arthur Vidal Diehl was born in London, England, in 1870, his mother a novelist and his father the director of an opera company. He broke off his study at Oxford University to study painting in Milan, Italy, and to travel Europe. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, but Diehl left England in 1891 for the United States, where he picked up work singing, acting and playing music, as well as piecework painting jobs. Eventually his painting become more serious, depicting both Old World and New World scenes and landscapes. He eventually settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts, with a studio for full-time painting. Arthur Vidal Diehl died in Provincetown in 1929.
