GUALDONI, Flaminio (dir.). Arnaldo Pomodoro: Catalogo ragionato della scultura, Milan, Skira, 2007. Œuvre reproduite à la page 629. / Work reproduced on page 629. N o  de catalogue raisonné / No. of catalogue raisonné: 714.

--

Twenty years after his fascination with the spherical form began, Arnaldo Pomodoro created this distinctive rendition of Sfera: a massive, bronze, divaricated globe. Its smooth, glossy exterior is interrupted by a jagged crevasse and lightning-like lacerations. It opens to reveal rows of cubic conveyor belts encircling a dense interior. The eroded margins of Sfera’s opening seem organic, in stark contrast to the even-edged interior blocks. Pomodoro, master of negative space, invites viewers to peer deep within the unknowable interiors of his planet-like creations.

In 1964, on the occasion of the 32nd Venice Biennale, in a room designed by Scarpa and dedicated exclusively to his work, Pomodoro presented his first Sfera. He had been awarded the International Prize for Sculpture at the São Paulo biennial the year prior, and his worldwide appeal continued to grow with this exhibition. His first solo exhibition in New York received a full-page spread in Time magazine and the MoMA acquired Sfera n. 1 shortly thereafter, cementing his place in the annals of contemporary sculpture.
