ARMAND TAGOONA (1926-1991), BAKER LAKE

Untitled (Story of the brother and sister who went to the moon), coloured pencil drawing, 1971 or 1972, signed "A. Tagoona" and in syllabics, 22 x 34 in, 56 x 86 cm sight Provenance: John and Mary Robertson Collection Illustrated and described in Armand Tagoona's 1975 book "Shadows" (plate 18), which was inspired by the 1972 exhibition of Tagoona's drawings at Robertson Galleries in Ottawa. From the book: "When I drew this I thought about the Inuk and his sister who went to the moon long before the white man went there. There are stories about people who went to the moon in different times... I drew the moon first with two people in it, the man and his sister, who are tied there so they cannot get loose and come back... What about the round world? Where did I get that idea? Did I ever see it for myself? No. Did you? Maybe if you ever go far enough you will see it all around." Exhibited and illustrated in Marie Routledge, "Inuit Art in the 1970's," Agnes Etherington Art Centre, 1979 (cat # 76).
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
