Along with the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity, Madame Bauchant provided this commentary about this lot (translated from French):
"This painting from 1946, painted after the war, represents a celebration in Old Town – we can recognize the shops and characteristic half-timbered houses. In the middle of the painting is a carousel/ride where we can distinguish only the orange top. Behind the ride, there is a white tower found in a small part of Old Town: Place Saint Pierre Le Puellier.
The painting is very representative of a certain number of works by André Bauchant.
4 Planes:
1. A typical Touraine sky (cloudy);
2. A background of very colourful Touraine houses;
3. A large/important crowd;
4. And standing out in the foreground, identifiable characters including:
-In the background, on the left, likely on a platform, a man standing in a green suit, tie and top hat; a street peddler or a magician, beside a woman – his assistant?;
-In the middle, a dancing couple;
-To the right of the couple, 4 young men in caps;
-To their right, a group of young women surround a seated woman. She seems to be reading the fortune/palm of the large young woman in a red skirt with a green bodice and loose hair. The others must be waiting their turn;
-To the left, a bourgeois couple. The man is in a dark suit and a hat; the woman is in a belted blue dress and a bonnet;
Beside them, 4 young children;
-On the bottom of the painting to the right, an old woman crouching with a wicker basket and seemingly broken bottles?;
-In front, a man and a woman seem quite tipsy;
-To the left, a man slouching. André Bauchant often dresses his characters in bright colours. These clothing are reminiscent of a Middle Ages fantasy…;
The Touraine and the Old Town were sources of inspiration for André Bauchant.
