Notes:
Andre Kertesz was born in 1894 in Budapest, Hungary. He started exploring photography before serving briefly in World War I, and following the war moved to Paris, in 1925. There he did photography for early illustrated magazines but recognition of his personal work grew quickly with his involvement in the experimental art movement Dada. Kertesz emigrated to the United States in 1936. He held his first solo show at PM Gallery in New York in December 1937. Today Kertesz is considered a giant of still photography, making groundbreaking contributions to the medium's compositions and the photo essay form. Solo exhibitions include Hungarian National Gallery, Serpentine Gallery (London), Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Art (Washington), Getty Centre (Los Angeles, Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris) and Royal Academy of Arts (London), among many others. Andre Kertesz died in New York in 1985.
