ARTIST STATEMENT
The content of my work speaks about environment. I am interested in referencing geography, mapping and elements of nature. In order to convey a scene of environment, I use forms from nature, including plant life, as well as topography and mapping to influence my process. I look to current events for the relations between modern mechanization and how it interacts with ecology and the natural environment and how this relationship affects my perception. The way I view the environment, is the inspiration for the imagery I create in my work. Currently I have limited my influences to those observed through travel and outdoor activities.
For the purpose of process, I have chosen to depict the environment, as a manipulation of form. By incorporating imagery, that to me implies a level of human interaction, I am able to depict an environment on the canvas. Therefore I chose to integrate a palate that is both natural and artificial. This allows me to connect the nature with man and machine and their integration through the environment.
I have chosen to approach painting in a loose, spontaneous, yet active way. I've worked primarily on, large outstretched canvas with acrylic paint. The first relationship between the canvas and the painting's subject is one of purity, which is reflected in nature prior to development. Initially I work wet into wet. The unexpected path the paint takes, inspires me to create the piece and allows me to maintain the integrity of my abstract approach. By rendering elements of landscape, I am able to create fictional representation of the environment's material and elements, which supports my perspective of the outdoors. I further direct my process with layering of colour, with an intuitive approach to application. I am also integrating pattern into my works. I am experimenting with the relationship of natural and geometric and how the two can be combined and juxtaposed within my work. I use manmade items to apply the paint in patterns onto the canvas surface.
I push myself to maintain a state of energy flow in my working process. I am interested in making work that reflects beauty. While including content that projects a subtext of purity. It is important to me that the work evokes emotion and that the viewer has the ability to engage in a dialogue.
