Lot description - from the online catalogue*
Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto
Notes:
The website describing the catalogue raisonné, Alex Katz: Prints 1947 - 2011, states that the artist was busy making new prints even as the catalogue was being compiled. Black Hats IV is clear proof of the artist's ongoing production of strong, sharply defined images. The scale is a continuation of his early tendency to produce large-scale paintings. In his figurative work, Katz's favoured models are his family members and friends. This deceivingly simple, direct image is a complex 68-colour screenprint on BFK Rives paper.
