"You really relied on the dogs. without them it was kind of hopeless." (Artist quoted in John Bennett and Susan Rowley, Uqalurait: An Oral History of Nunavut, McGill-Queen's UP, 2004, p. 280.) Examples of Aksayook's ivory carving (including a similar dog sled) can be seen in the Bildfell Collection at the ROM, Toronto, with works dating back to the 1940s (see www.rom.on.ca/exhibits/ivory/bildfell). He received an Order of Canada in 1995 for his work in transporting patients from outpost camps to the hospital in Pangnirtung.
