Akio Onda was born in Tokyo in 1924. He studied Western-style painting at Musashino College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1956. In 1963, he became an assistant to Shiko Munakata, who greatly influenced Onda's woodblock printing. Onda started exhibiting his own woodblock prints in 1965, and he was soon represented by major art galleries in Japan. Popular subjects include classic haiku poetry, childhood and Buddhist philosophy.
