Pierre-François Ouellet Contemporain, Montreal
Private Collection, Montreal
Notes:
This stunning piece by contemporary photographer Adad Hannah is part of a larger series of photographs taken during a staged recreation of Théodore Géricault’s 1818 - 1819 monumental painting The Raft of the Medusa. Produced by Hannah and art collector Gus Horn, this project took place in 2009, in 100 Mile House, a community of 2,000 people in central British Columbia. Volunteers from the community came together to build the set, make costumes and act as models for this project. The resulting tableau vivant was performed on May 2 and 3 of 2009 for a live audience and a life drawing class, and was documented by Hanna’s video recorder and camera. The series was exhibited in the USA, Toronto and Montreal. The intensity and drama of this re-enactment of Géricault’s masterpiece translates exceptionally well through Hanna’s lens. The carefully constructed composition and cinematographic lighting conveys eloquently the plight of the Raft’s survivors.
