Provenance:
David Findlay Jr Gallery, New York
Private Collection, Ontario
Notes:
Little is known about the identity of A. Cedro, though he appears to have been primarily based in California in the turn of the 20th century. This subject of this work is much further away, depicting one of several attempts by Robert E. Peary to find the North Pole. Peary attempted two expeditions on the sailing ship Roosevelt, first in the winter of 1905-06 and another in 1908-09. This is one of several paintings of these expeditions produced by Cedro, leading to speculation that he may have been included as a member of the Roosevelt's crew.
