Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
Zhong-Yang Huang's parents encouraged him to draw and paint from the age of four and he began formal training in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy at age eight. At 15 years old, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution he was forced to leave school and work in the fields. For ten years he toiled in the rice fields for hours every day, but he continued to paint. He entered the Guangdong Province Art and Craft Academy and completed his undergraduate degree after the Cultural Revolution. He was awarded a Master's degree from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts where he worked as an instructor until 1984. In 1984, Yang had the opportunity to travel to Canada as a visiting student and he completed a second Masters Degree, from the University of Regina, in Saskatchewan. Yang's work is influenced by many periods of art history: the Pre-Raphaelite School, the French Impressionists, as well as the work of the great Dutch painter Rembrandt.
